Every possession has three beats:
Clocks: cross half court before the bring-up count ends, then beat the shot clock. A violation is a turnover and a free point.
Architect's Gambit: after a turnover you place the ball on a center square. Your own side keeps the backcourt; across the line starts you in the frontcourt with the shot clock live.
